Painting practice - Week 4 - Values - Light settings

Schoolism Course: Painting with Light and Color

Course Lesson: 4 - Adjusting Values for Different Lighting situations

Study Goal: Keep improving values observation - easily transition from diffuse lighting to direct lighting

What I’ve Learned:
1 - I feel like I am not good enough at simplifying, I need to pay more attention.
2 - Back and lateral direct lighting create a much more theatrical and dramatic and interesting effect, frontal and upper lighting somehow less. Especially lighting it frontally, it feels like taking a picture with your camera using flash, which never gives the best results. Top lighting can be interesting because is really dramatic but I need to experiment with different light sources and intensities and objects and planes not so close to each other.

Additional Notes: I sometimes prefer to do the 3 values study with the lazo and a clean result and separate shapes on different layers, and sometimes I prefer to just paint everything roughly on the canvas with my 3 values and then select the shapes and create the separate layers after (like I did on exercise n. 5, the diary). Lazo works great if you have reflective surfaces to work on later but I prefer to establish everything by painting loose on the canvas all together at the beginning.... I guess it depends case by case
